Vacation

Now I have almost had my first vacation week for this summer. Have I been free? Of course, but not completely. But it is self chosen. If I can serve some good customers, answer a few calls and reply to some e-mails. then when I'm back on work, I can more relax and focus on new tasks instead of hunting the ghost of things that MUST be done. Is this popular by my family? Not always, but in the long run I think I am a more relaxed person even at home. My kids like the fact that my laptop almost always is with us on travels. This year I did disconnect the switchboard so hopefully I do'nt get calls from telesales. Have a nice summer all of You! This is not the only place where I will spend my vacation. ...

Old news, Domino and Notes 8.5 is here

I hav'nt had the time to blog for a while. Here is my comments about what have happened. Beta 1 of Notes and domino 8.5 is here, and it looks greate - under the hood. On the desktop it is not a big deal. The most changes is on he server. Changes on thinks like roaming, attachment store, mail routing, id-store, user management. These changes is in most cases not visible to the end user. On the Notes client some changes are made, like the possibility to see iCal feeds in the calendar. Google calendar is one of them. There is not a lot of them but NHL have one and "remembertemilk" has another. My opinion (witch has to be the bottom line) is that there is a big thing missing in the calendar features. The possibility to have a calendar in domino to act like a iCal feed. Hpoefully we will hav this soon. ...

Internet usage and Maslows hierachy

Maslows hiearchy of needs, a theory that You learned in school, was stating that the most important things in live is food and warmth. On the top things like career. How does this fit in to the mordern society. Where does Internet usage come in and what steeres this. In China there is over 210000 internetusers, just the same number as in US. But in penetration of the country it is barely 16%, where US have over 70 % penetration. Sweden is a little bit ahead of US with 77 %. This is fact from the Internet World Stats . Africa in common has a penetration of 5.3 %, and Asia 13.7 %. What can we leard here? The internet usage can be used to measure the wealth of a country, and it is placed in the topmost half of the hiearchy. The poorer country the less internetusers. For the human it is almost hte same. Food, of course comes ahead of computers. Deter is thou strage figures in the statistics. Somalia one of the worlds poorest countries, with 9.7 mil. inhabitans has 94000 internetusers. Liberia has 1000. One other refection is that these countries can be a enormous market for IT- industrie. When the countries has reached a step further due to Maslow. China is there and, but still has a big share left to go with 15.9 %. There is over 1 bil. people i China without internet. And IBM, probably without a PC, and software. Notes has 150 milj users, how about getting som from China or Africa, 5 % from China is a substatial raise. ...

Microsoft supports ODF

Yesterday Microsoft surprisingly announced that they will support Open Document format (ODF). Microsoft also participates in the OASIS organisation. More of this to read on this article from John D. Head and in the pressrelease. Computer Sweden add some interesting details. Microsoft is not going to support the ISO certified OOXML format in Office 2007, but will support an older version in that release. The support for ISO certified OOXML win not be available until next release of MS Office. There is severe differences between the two versions of OOXML. Knowing MS backwards compability history, my personal view is that it is probably so that the customer has to convert the documents between the new OOXML version. Thank god ODF is supported. ...

Journal vs Wiki, Discussion vs Blog

What is a blog and what is a wiki. I recently read a article in a Swedish computer magazine about wikis. A interesting article, surprisingly mentioned Dominowiki from Ben Poole . But what is a wiki really. In Lotus Notes we are very used to work with knowledgebases in different kinds, like journals, document databases and so on. Wiki is just another one. Same with blogs, we have worked with discussion databases in Years. Don't get me wrong, I like wikis and blogs. I like the webinterface I like the looks, feels and the simplicity. I just want to point out that Domino is the platform with the most experience in this kind of apps. So keep on using domino but do remember that there is not so often You see new things in the sun. ...

Trying to work on a train

I love traveling by train. I am not sure how common this is in the USA but in Europe You can go almost anywhere by train. With good comfort and space You can relax on the way to Your destination. I prefer when traveling for work to go by 1:st class. When going with my family 2:class, kids can have more fun there and don't have to sit quiet. Right now I'm on my way to Stockholm. Trying to work, have internet connected... But.., The fine modern train is all shaking, it shakes like hell. so I can barely type on the keyboard, nor pointing with the mouse. Very disturbing. I suspect that this is a effect of that my car is the last one on the train. I have never felt this when my seat has been in one of the foremost cars. Stressing. I must have some work done, so I just have to keep on trying. Train travel. This Easter, me and my family got to Austria skiing. By train ...

IBM, when does Your parents come home

If You have businesspartners focusing 100% on Your products, why not give them a little bit of focus. Even if the partner is small in numbers of employees it can give You substantial business. No.. Not IBM the focus on BIG partners, where IBM is one of many, and in most case a small supplier. Where the partner on their website, if You search for "Lotus", You get result telling You how to change from Lotus to MS. Where they almost have no attention. The small IBM focused partner gets almost no attention at all, we don't even get a contact person. Did not Your parents tell You that Your most valuable contacts is the one You already have. If You really want to get a little bit of the huge SMB market, learn to work with SMB partners! ...

Are companies really aware of how little they use Microsoft? Or even more, do they know how easy they can move away from the dependance.
Most enterprise companies does not use a MS ERP system, they use large scale systems like Unix, System I or Z-systems. Ok, some uses SAP on MS but there is a possibility to move to, for example, System I. For fileserver services a lot of enterprises use Windows servers, so most people would say that here is the biggest challenge. It is really not. from a user perspective as long as You can save a file down to "G:" or onto a map in a network drive You are satisfied. Who cares what operating system the server runs on. It is a administrator thing. Administrators should do what we tell them to. "-We have better knowledge in Windows server", crap!. Get some education!
Next thing is authentication i.e. Directory services. Here IS the challenge. Why? Not because of the complexity of Active Directory and the great services it delivers. No, because of how many suppliers that only relies the authentication on AD. If the interfaces and the functionality was setting the rule, I think e-directory or Open LDAP is a better choice.

E-mail... Did I mention Lotus Notes and Domino?. Run it on the platform You want. Linux or System I.

On the desktop, most users can go with Ubuntu or Opensuse. For Office functionality, please use OpenOffice.
The clients to their ERP system can easily be ran from a web-browser.

Today I feel like I have an upgrade day. Starting this morning I've upgraded my Notes client to 8.5 latest codedrop. No big problems. had to reinstall once, which is not so bad for an early codedrop. Later on I had to upgrade my Virtualbox to get USB work better in my (not wanted) virtual XP machine. And now when I remember, the last week I spent 2 days upgrading Our invoicingsystem. That was worse!
Left to do perhaps today is an upgrade of my testserver (Domino) also to latest drop.
I do spend a lot of time with trying to get my laptop work smother. Last week I was at IBM talking. The switching between screens was not all successful. Therefore I had to reconfigure my Opensuse so the external VGA-port is always active. I also have had an annoying thing with my wireless card. When restoring the computer after suspend, the wlan never starts. Now I finally made a script taking care of this.
I am stubborn to use Opensuse as a client and I never give up. Tries no use absolutely no Microsoft if I can avoid it.

The time is 20 minutes before midnight on last day of April. It has been a great month in several ways. A lot of business of course, but also exiting meetings and discussions. The DPcalls is really interesting and i believe next version of Notes and Domino are going to take us further on and give MS a fight. Notes 8 was the best version of the client since Notes 5. Next is taking Domino server to the same level. Hereafter a lot of the argument of leaving Domino is gone, is no more..

Had a good meeting today with another BP "Pulsen". I think market of archiving has just begun. Donova is not taking part of that market but I think it can give us a lot of business anyway, because the customers are going to look thru their servers and infrastructure and need to upgrade and tune. Donova still is focusing on Lotus brand, we will not go for business in either Tivoli, DB2 nor Websphere.

Just got a interesting article from Adam Gartenberg about archiving, haha. Link . White House has none. Pulsen here is an opportunity.

As usual demo devil was attending as well but after a while it got thru except for some bad luck with widgets. Seems not all steady.... . I talked a little about what may be coming up in next release, but of course with precautions in respect of the nondisclosure with IBM. I used the presentation from LSCTY 2008. Presentation
There is a lot lot more to talk about but people just have to wait. There is going to be a public beta i think.
They have to wait just like all Stockholm had to wait today, the traffic was a complete mess, a truck had an accident and all traffic in the whole area just breaks down. I'd like to send my appreciation to the cabdriver who was good enough to find a way around and got me to my hotel.
Right now I am sitting in my lousy hotel trying to get tired. I managed to get twitter included on my blog at the right side. What do You think?
