Pretty looks are important for sure but the really *new* thing with real Wikis is that they create automatic hyperlinks to other documents when you write a "CamelCase" word in your text. I haven´t seen that in any Notes database yet.

And yes, DominoWiki has this feature, but only in the web interface as far as I know.

I was really disappointed in the QuickR 8.0 so called "Wiki", which does not have this functionality at all. You have to create the links manually and that´s not a Wiki in my book. I haven´t seen the 8.1 variant but I hope they have fixed this "bug" now.

I cannot agree with you more. Apart from the pretty interface, I see nothing in a Wiki or a Blog that couldn't have been done in Lotus Notes back in the early/mid 90's.

In fact the Notes Partner discussion databases in the early and mid 90's were easier to use, faster and easier to track updates (by unread count) in my opinion.

Replication allowed you to easily read and interact with people while you were disconnected and people tended to behave more decently because their identity was known. Anonymous access is a big step backward in my opinion.

It was also nice to be able to go back and correct a typo because you had Author ACL access, something that often frustrates me on some of my blog comments.

Even discussion threads were easier to follow and gave better context than some of the current collaborative alternatives and having a local spell checker was also an advantage.

Have we really progressed that far?

And have what we lost been made up for by what we have gained? I wonder...

Well, I'm writing this comment while commuting to work to Washington, DC...on a train. Things are a little bumpy on the MARC commuter train, but I've had no trouble typing.

That apparent advantage over your current situation aside, the passenger rail infrastructure in this country is nowhere near as far-reaching as that in Europe. Even having only a "pre-chunnel" perspective of the Eurail experience it is clear we are way behind. This fact underpins our current suffering over high gas prices.

Let's see, I can probably list all the cities in the US with reasonably developed commuter rail service (not counting subways):

- New York

- Boston

- Washington

- Chicago

- Philadelphia

- Baltimore

I may be missing some (e.g. LA?) but the few other possibilities (e.g. South Florida), are from my understanding very small.
