Vacation

Mats Jansson  July 4 2008 07:36:36 AM
Now I have almost had my first vacation week for this summer. Have I been free? Of course, but not completely. But it is self chosen. If I can serve some good customers, answer a few calls and reply to some e-mails. then when I'm back on work, I can more relax and focus on new tasks instead of hunting the ghost of things that MUST be done. Is this popular by my family? Not always, but in the long run I think I am a more relaxed person even at home. My kids like the fact that my laptop almost always is with us on travels. This year I did disconnect the switchboard so hopefully I do'nt get calls from telesales.
Have a nice summer all of You!

This is not the only place where I will spend my vacation.

Old news, Domino and Notes 8.5 is here

    Mats Jansson  June 10 2008 03:58:51 PM
I hav'nt had the time to blog for a while. Here is my comments about what have happened.
Beta 1 of Notes and domino 8.5 is here, and it looks greate - under the hood. On the desktop it is not a big deal. The most changes is on he server. Changes on thinks like roaming, attachment store, mail routing, id-store, user management. These changes is in most cases not visible to the end user.
On the Notes client some changes are made, like the possibility to see iCal feeds in the calendar. Google calendar is one of them. There is not a lot of them but NHL have one and "remembertemilk" has another.
My opinion (witch has to be the bottom line) is that there is a big thing missing in the calendar features. The possibility to have a calendar in domino to act like a iCal feed. Hpoefully we will hav this soon.

    Internet usage and Maslows hierachy

    Mats Jansson  May 25 2008 07:19:58 AM
Maslows hiearchy of needs, a theory that You learned in school, was stating that the most important things in live is food and warmth. On the top things like career. How does this fit in to the mordern society.
Where does Internet usage come in and what steeres this.
    Image:Internet usage and Maslows hierachy

In China there is over 210000 internetusers, just the same number as in US. But in penetration of the country it is barely 16%, where US have over 70 % penetration. Sweden is a little bit ahead of US with 77 %. This is fact from the Internet World Stats .  Africa in common has a penetration of 5.3 %, and Asia 13.7 %. What can we leard here? The internet usage can be used to measure the wealth of a country, and it is placed in the topmost half of the hiearchy. The poorer country the less internetusers. For the human it is almost hte same. Food, of course comes ahead of computers.
Deter is thou strage figures in the statistics. Somalia one of the worlds poorest countries, with 9.7 mil. inhabitans has 94000 internetusers. Liberia has 1000.
One other refection is that these countries can be a enormous market for IT- industrie. When the countries has reached a step further due to Maslow. China is there and, but still has a big share left to go with 15.9 %.  There is over 1 bil. people i China without internet. And IBM, probably without a PC, and software. Notes has 150 milj users, how about getting som from China or Africa, 5 % from China is a substatial raise.

    Microsoft supports ODF

    Mats Jansson  May 23 2008 11:53:35 AM
Yesterday Microsoft surprisingly announced that they will support Open Document format (ODF). Microsoft also participates in the OASIS organisation. More of this to read on this article from John D. Head and in the pressrelease. Computer Sweden add some interesting details. Microsoft is not going to support the ISO certified OOXML format in Office 2007, but will support an older version in that release. The support for ISO certified OOXML win not be available until next release of MS Office. There is severe differences between the two versions of OOXML. Knowing  MS backwards compability history, my personal view is that it is probably so that the customer has to convert the documents between the new OOXML version. Thank god ODF is supported.
